Useful Video for Freshmen

Author: Rebecca Gordon (Philosophy, Arts & Sciences)

Here's a series of videos designed to help freshmen develop an effective approach to doing college-level work. In the first one the presenter, a cognitive psychologist from Samford University, introduces the concept of "metacognition." By this he means a student's ability to judge how well she or he understands the material and is performing, for example, on an exam.

His point is that less successful students are more likely to overestimate their performance. He thinks that for freshman this may be true in part because their metacognition is still calibrated to the requirements of high school level work.
