Dr. Joseph L. White is Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine, and known as the "godfather" of Black Psychology. He is a graduate of San Francisco State University where he was a classmate of former Mayor Willie Brown and Congressman John Burton, and was the first African American licensed psychologist in the State of California. Governor Edmund G. Brown, Sr. appointed him Chair of the State Board of Psychology.
Besides being a renowned author, scholar, and sought-after keynote speaker, Dr. White consults on diversity at Creighton University at the invitation of former President John P. Schlegel, has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Minnesota, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Menninger Foundation. Most significantly to many colleagues and former students, Dr. White is a generous, inclusive, and extremely resourceful mentor who always stays in touch. He has actively counseled, supported, and advanced the careers of scores of students and professionals of all colors, backgrounds, and professions, including at USF.
